“What happened back on August 3 still feels so surreal to me,” Khalaf said. “People were being slaughtered for no reason. As time goes by, we Yazidis are coming to a realization—we can no longer depend on any Middle Eastern government for our survival. And if we and the community outside the Middle East doesn’t do anything, we will cease to exist.”
